Krasnodar: ‘String Way’ or Cableway?

Krasnodar, 22 February – Yug Times. During the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi, Krasnodar Mayor Yevgeni Pervyshov presented the investment project of the so-called ‘cable metro’ to the Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev.

Last November, the project was approved by the Strategic Council working in Krasnodar under the aegis of the Mayor’s Office. The planned total length of the cableway is 36 km, with the travelling speed of 27 km/h. The idea of the project has reportedly been backed by such large enterprises as the construction companies Europea and Semia (The Family). It should be remembered, however, that different views also exist in the city. Aleksandr Zholtikov, Chair of the regional public organization of civic initiatives in town-planning, comments on the new idea:

“The pattern approved by the city authorities and public activists seems somewhat unpractical, because it would be necessary to overcome several very important obstacles to construct suchlike network in the city. First, it would be hard to find any site in Krasnodar that is free from engineering communications. Second, the [planned] average speed of the proposed cableway is, to put it mildly, not high.

“For a start, it might be worthwhile considering some pilot project with a higher design speed than the announced 27 km/h.

“Belarus, for instance, has constructed a test-ground for the so-called ‘string transport’. Anatoli Yunitsky, engineer, inventor and correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, has been working on this project for about 40 years. He promises that his brainchild would be able to develop a speed up to 150 km/h within the precincts of the city.

“The grace of Yunitsky’s project is that it will not require allotment of large land plots and reclassifying them, as it happens in case of motorways. What it needs is just a 10 x 10 m site per kilometre - without changing the landscape, existing buildings, engineering communications and edifices.

“Another advantage of Yunitsky’s project is a possibility of choosing several types of engines working on different fuels: gas, petrol or electricity.”
